Memoria

Memoria (latin for memory) is a large installation work created for a lateral chapel in Eglise Saint-Joseph in Deschambault, Quebec.  In keeping with the Biennale du Lin theme, the work incorporates old handmade linens. The linens were donated by numerous individuals and then were embroidered upon by myself as well as a number of contemporary practitioners of visual art in honour of their predecessors: all the women who created the beautiful handiwork of crochet, tatting, cutwork, etc. found on the linens presented. The piece references the subtle presence of women within the church evoked through ecclesiastical embroideries and as well as paying respect to those responsible for the washing and pressing of the church linens. The installation surrounds the two figures in the altar, Mary and her mother, Anne, providing a special opportunity to point out matrilineal relationships and celebrate women’s contributions within as well as outside a religious context.
